Akshay Shinde, Badlapur Assault Accused, was fatally shot by the Mumbai Police. According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and deputy Devendra Fadnavis, Shinde was killed in self-defense after snatching a policeman’s gun and firing at an assistant inspector inside the police vehicle. He was killed in retaliatory firing by a police officer.
Police inspector Sanjay Shinde, known for his involvement in “encounters,” is believed to have fired the fatal shot that killed Akshay. He and Assistant Police Inspector Nilesh More were injured by Akshay before he was neutralized, according to the reports of India Today.
Sanjay Shinde previously worked with the Thane Police Crime Branch’s anti-extortion cell and served with Mumbai Police. Then he was asked to join the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the Badlapur case by the Maharashtra government.
Sanjay Shinde was also part of the team that arrested Iqbal Kaskar- brother of Dawood Ibrahim, in February 2022 for money laundering following raids on his linked properties.
Inspector Shinde’s tenure with the Thane Police Crime Branch was notable as he was part of an anti-extortion cell led by Pradeep Sharma IPS, a renowned ‘encounter specialist’ in Maharashtra police circles. Sharma reportedly eliminated over 100 criminals during his service, including several members of the Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan gangs in the 1990s. He was known for high-profile encounters during violent police action.
Inspector Sanjay Shinde was part of a squad that was sent from Taloja jail to Akshay and Badlapur during an incident.
